Dear Parents and Carers
Welcome to the final edition of Parent Talk for 2023. We hope you experience the peace and joy of the Advent season as we draw closer to the end of the year. You'll find a wonderful Family Advent Guide and prayer, courtesy of our Diocese of Lismore parent representative in this article.
We are very proud to announce the recipients of our 2023 Roger O'Sullivan Awards in this edition. We received 15 wonderful entries; it is heartening to see so many schools engaging parents in their children's learning and we extend our congratulations to all school communities for creating such positive experiences for parents, carers and students.
At our Term 4 meetings last week, held at the Novotel Sydney International Airport Hotel, we ended the year with our AGM, confirming the appointments of our 2024 Council and Committee Members. Find out who your parent reps are here.
We will be powering into 2024 with our new strategic plan (read the article here), committed to serving you and being a strong voice for all our parents and families of students in NSW and ACT schools. The 2024-2026 Strategic Plan has three goals in our pillars of Leadership, Advocacy and Support, and the focus for the next three years is on ensuring we have open channels of communication with our stakeholders, provide opportunities for schools and parents to learn more about parent engagement in their children's learning, and ensuring our services and resources are inclusive and suitable for the changing parent demographic in our schools.
All of us at CCSP wish you a happy, relaxing and meaningful Christmas season. It is our hope that as we celebrate the birth of the infant Jesus, you are renewed and enjoy time with those you love.
God bless,
Catherine Garrett-Jones
Executive Director
Announcing the 2023 Roger O'Sullivan Awards Recipients
The Council of Catholic School Parents NSW/ACT
proudly announces the recipients of the
2023 Roger O’Sullivan Award
Congratulations to Mount Carmel Catholic College, Varroville, Diocese of Wollongong
for the Mount Carmel Home–School Literacy Partnership
CCSP would like to acknowledge, thank and congratulate all our wonderful school communities who submitted entries to our Roger O’Sullivan annual award, and for their effort and commitment to building partnerships between home and school to enhance the learning outcomes of students.
We received 15 impressive entries, and the judges had an extremely difficult decision selecting from the inspiring projects and initiatives that schools have undertaken to improve family engagement.
A huge ‘congratulations’ goes to Mount Carmel Catholic College, Varroville, who took out First Place in the 2023 Roger O’Sullivan Award and is the recipient of our $5000 grant.
The independent judging panel awarded the grant to Mount Carmel Catholic College for their ‘Mount Carmel Home–School Literacy Partnership’, as it acknowledges that parents are the primary and ongoing educators of their children and is an excellent example of how learning partnerships between school and home improves student outcomes. The literacy project has involved building rich and meaningful connections with parents and caregivers, ensuring parents understand the ‘language of learning’ and engendering an intrinsic love of learning and positive sense of self in students.
'The project began with one teacher’s passionate belief that as the first and continuing educators of their children, parents and carers are a vital part of the learning process. Through respectful dialogue and attentive listening, an authentic relationship was forged with the parents of a Year 8 English class.
Stories of negative school experiences, disconnection and literacy struggles were shared along with prayerful hope that their children would have opportunities to learn and to flourish. This parental engagement had a significant impact on the learning of the students in this class. The initiative evolved into a whole school commitment to a joint action in which parents and teachers worked together to improve student learning outcomes.
The Mount Carmel Home-School Literacy Partnership program – connecting learning at home and learning at school – resulted in the establishment of regular literacy conversations, reading and writing workshops, the publishing of a weekly literacy article for parents and teachers, and the most unexpected outcome – the creation of a vibrant Parent Library. This last initiative came from a recognised need for ready access to books and further opportunities for support and connection in a non-threatening context. Students, families and teachers have journeyed together here.'
CCSP would like to acknowledge, thank and congratulate the school communities for their effort and commitment to building partnerships between home and school to enhance the learning outcomes of students.

Our 2024 Council and Committee Members
At CCSP we recently held our Term 4 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Committee and CCSP Council meetings and AGM at the Sydney Novotel International Airport.
We are delighted to announce our 2024 members of the Committee and Council, authorised by the 11 Diocesan Directors in NSW/ACT and by the Federation board for our independent schools.
A big thank-you to our outgoing Chair, Wayne Davie, from Diocese of Parramatta, who served CCSP in this role with passion and commitment and saw us through the Covid years. Congratulations to our new Chair, Anne Fehon, who represents the Federation of Religious Institute and Ministerial PJP Catholic School Authorities in NSW and ACT as our parent representative, and our new Deputy Chair, Cheryl Murphy from the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.

CCSP's New 2024-2026 Strategic Plan
Our goals are:
Leadership: To guide an authentically Catholic approach to leadership within our schools and parent bodies to support family engagement.
Advocacy: To ensure that CCSP is recognised as a Catholic voice that advocates for families who have chosen a Catholic education for their children
Support: To support families and schools to engage in partnerships that reflect Catholic values and improve student outcomes
Our new strategic plan identifies future-focused, long-term goals for the next three years that will ensure we are providing exceptional service for all parents and carers in NSW and ACT Catholic schools in line with our mission statement and Constitution.
Countering Child Exploitation Resources for Parents and Carers
In the lead-up to the end-of-year school holidays, the Australian Federal Police's Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE) has provided resources especially for parents and carers with information and guidance to empower you to help keep your children safe.
Online child sexual exploitation can be confronting and not an issue that you may have considered could affect you or your child. It is important that parents and carers understand what young people see, say and do online in order to know how to take action to prevent online challenges.
Sextortion is a form of online blackmail where someone tricks or coerces you into sending sexual images of yourself and then threatens to share the images unless you comply with their demands. The ACCCE is receiving around 300 reports of financial sextortion per month, with the majority of reports involving 13-17-year-olds. There are serious safety concerns for victims, with instances of self-harm attributed to this crime.
Parents and carers can go to the ACCCE website and find the following:
- Downloadable posters
- Animations
- ThinkUKnow online blackmail and sexual extortion response kit
- Messaging kits and social media assets

Read LessSchool Students Broadband Initiative (SSBI)
To boost education opportunities and narrow the digital divide, the Australian Government is providing up to 30,000 eligible families with school age children with no internet at home access to free nbn® for one year under the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI). Access to the SSBI will become easier, with the announcement of a National Referral Centre that parents/carers with school students can contact directly to check their eligibility.
For information, please click School Students Broadband Initiative
To be eligible for SSBI, families working directly with an SSBI Nominating Organisation, or self-nominating through the National Referral Centre, must:
- Have a child living at home that is enrolled in an Australian school (up to year 12 including from Prep in Qld/Vic/Tas & Kindy in NSW).
- Not have an active nbn® network internet service at home. Having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibility.
- Live in a premises that can access a standard* nbn service.
- Not have had an active nbn connection during the previous 14 days.
- Either be referred by a nominating organisation or have your suitability determined via an assessment conducted by the National Referral Centre
Budget-Friendly Family Recipes from Jane de Graaff and CCSP
Earlier this year CCSP's Executive Director Cath Garrett-Jones was lucky enough to team up with food presenter Jane de Graaff to make some videos for parents and carers on budget-friendly shopping, recipes and cooking tips to make your food dollar go further.
Look out for the first video, 'Lunchboxes don’t need to be a battlefield!', which we'll share on 20 January next year on Facebook, just in time to prepare for getting kids back to school.
As Jane says, 'Like any parent, I know the very real struggle of filling a lunchbox. The best advice I ever had came from a nutritionist who said that parents put too much pressure on themselves. There’s a lot for a lunchbox to compete with when kids have exciting things going on. So, just do your best and don’t stress about it.'
Look out for this special video on our Facebook page on 20 January: We'll give you the recipes, Jane will tell us her favourite tips for filling lunchboxes, and we'll ask you to send us in your top tip lunchbox hacks so we can share them with other mums and dads and carers.
This Advent guide, kindly provided by Diocese of Lismore, has a weekly activity and prayer to help your family in getting ready for Christmas.
Making an Advent wreath can assist your family to learn about the season while building Christ-focused anticipation for Christmas in a simple, peaceful way.
May your Advent be full of the joy and peace of Christ this year!
